Joining IBP

Introduction
International Building Press was founded in 1969. Since that time it has provided a unique forum for national, regional, business and technical journalists, and press relations professionals involved in the construction, architectural and property sectors.
Administered by a committee, elected from the membership each year, IBP arranges press briefings, symposia, visits, social occasions and a variety of other events.
In addition, IBP organises the prestigious annual journalism awards. Sponsored by a range of major companies and institutions, the IBP Awards recognise excellence in journalism in architecture, construction and property and offer substantial prizes as well as prestige to the winners.

An outline of some of the services and activities, which IBP provides are described below.

Aims
IBP encourages and acknowledges high standards of journalism.

IBP promotes activities which broaden members' knowledge of the construction, architectural and property sectors.

IBP increases the influence of writers in Government circles, the building industry and national media.

IBP brings together journalists and press and public relations officers socially.

IBP informs members of activities and developments in industry business publishing houses
Activities
Briefing meetings
Include on-the-record discussions with Government Ministers, trade union leaders, construction, architecture and property professionals, industrialists and other prominent figures in the building field. Occasionally meetings are off-the-record, providing background information on topical subjects.

Education meetings
Seminars with guest speakers on subjects of general interest; introductory courses for journalists new to the construction field; and one-day or half-day seminars open to members at reduced rates and non-members.

Debate
The annual Richard Catt Environmental Debate focuses on current issues and long-term solutions. Speakers have included: Dickon Robinson, Peabody Trust; Professor David Cadman and Lord Rogers of Riverside, chairman of the Urban Task Force.

Visits
Arranged frequently to places of interest. Past visits have included: South Wales and Manchester Property Scene; South Bank Forum; Pride Park regeneration site, Derby; Greenwich Peninsula; Old Royal Naval College; Channel Tunnel Rail Link and the Royal Arsenal/Millennium Village.

Social events
An integral part of IBP's activity, these provide an informal opportunity for members and their guests to meet socially. As well as an annual quiz, cricket match, five-a-side football and chairman's reception, social elements go to make-up the Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation Dinner.

Annual Dinner
The IBP Annual Dinner is normally held mid way through the year (June/July) with a high profile key speaker. Speakers have included: Richard Lambert, Editor, Financial Times; Sir Frank Lampl, Chairman, Bovis Group; Sir Alan Cockshaw, President, The Institution of Civil Engineers; Tony Fitzpatrick, Ove Arup Partnership; Tom Rubython, Editor, Sunday Business and design guru, Stephen Bayley.
